vote on referendum

On November 7, Fountain Inn voters will be voting on a referendum that would change the form of government in our city from "Mayor Council" (commonly called "strong mayor") to "Council" form of government.

In short, this referendum would mean our mayor position on City Council would no longer have numerous executive powers that it currently grants to the office holder. Current powers include: hiring/firing of city employees, managing day-to-day operations of city staff, writing and proposing a budget to City Council, signing various contracts on behalf of the city without a Council vote.

In the "Council" form of government, all of these powers would disappear and the Mayor would become essentially a figure head for the city. This would also equalize the power of every City Council member, giving all 7 members, including the Mayor, an equal voice in the democratic process.

At CreateInn, we feel as if more democracy is always a better idea.

Our current Mayor has stated, at a recent Council meeting, that "...a change in form of government is not something I'm opposed to."

Let's also not forget that there are a couple of City Council seats up at the same time and will be on the ballot. So be sure to vote!
